9/23/000 Rally held at Greensboro Academy Gymnasium!
The rally was a huge success! Despite having to move the rally to an alternate location because of bad weather, well over 300 triad residents gathered to protest and speak about the hub. (I almost didn't find a parking space, it was so crowded!) Guilford County Commissioner Linda Shaw and Senator Robert (Bob) Shaw were there to speak against the hub, as well as Representative Stephen W. Wood and author Thomas Perry. There were other members of our local government speaking as well.
Pilot Gil Happel gave a graphic description of the way a plane makes noise, and described the effects the take-off and landing patterns of the proposed hub would have on High Point, Jamestown and Greensboro. The news media was well represented, although the crews for channels 2 and 8 left early, before Guilford County Commissioner Linda Shaw and Senator Bob Shaw spoke. It seems they missed the best parts.
The High Point Enterprise gave a mediocre write up in Sunday's paper with a biased headline reading "FedEx opponents step up rhetoric." (Webster's New World Dictionary defines rhetoric as "artificial eloquence; language that is showy and elaborate but largely empty of clear ideas or sincere emotion."
What I heard was clear, very sincere, and brought plenty of new information out. As much time as I have spent learning about the hub, I still learned plenty more. One important thing I learned was that the people opposed to the hub are very determined and sincere. I did not know that so many of our elected government officials were also opposed to the hub.
There was entertainment for the kids. They got an excellent magic show, and a wonderful clown entertained them and made balloon creations for them. People were openly discussing different ideas and points of view, and were supportive of each other.
In all, I got a good feeling about the rally and look forward to the next one.

9/19/000 We attended the Airport Authority meeting at PTIA.  The board members allowed each speaker a generous three minutes to speak, each.  Amazingly, Stephanie at PTIA told us that all the info we gave when we signed up to speak (name, address, phone number, etc.) was now a matter of public record. When I asked if I could have the information for the board members, we were told that information was not public.  I guess the board members don't have anything to say at these meetings.
I asked some of the other speakers if they would send me a copy of their comments so I could post them here.  I'll provide a link as I get them posted. Each of the other speakers had some excellent comments, and there was a larger crowd there than I expected. It was standing room only.  Of course, PTIA only gave us a whopping dozen or so chairs to use.
Meanwhile, here is the speech I gave. I'll soon have some photos from the meeting posted.
One person pointedly asked for answers to her questions.  Chairman of the Board Hudnall Christopher stated they weren't there to answer questions.
Only two people spoke out for the hub, one of whom lives in Rockingham County.  Should they wish equal time, I will be more than happy to post their comments and point of view here.  Just drop me an e-mail.  I'm willing to give your side fair treatment, and I won't limit you to three minutes of material.

9/18/000 Sent out the first wave of press releases.  The web site wasn't even officially open, yet it received over 600 visitors within ten hours of the press releases. This was with the entrance still being hidden from view!  Amazing.

9/9/2000 Rally held in High Point!
Today a rally was held in High Point, NC at the intersection of Eastchester Drive (Hwy 68) and Wendover / Skeet Club roads.  Dozens of people of all ages and economic levels attended, holding signs, wearing gas masks, hearing protectors, and handing out flyers.  The crowd was very well behaved.  There were several police officers present.
One police officer told me (anonymously) that he felt the new hub would result in more crime. Perhaps, perhaps not.  It's hard to say. It's certain that people's stress levels will go up as a result of the new hub.  People under stress do tend to commit more acts of violence, so it's a good chance we will see more crime as a result.

The over all feeling I got was one of people working together for a common goal.  You can view pictures of the event here:
